27층 아파트에서 내려다 보이는 온타리오 호수와 Park.
(우리나라의 약 40배가 넘는다나?,,,)
* Tim Hortons Coffee와의 인연.*
1997년 처음 이민 당시에는 한국의 I,M.F 로
초기 이민자의 긴장감이란,
추운 겨울과 함께 마음도 얼어있었다.
그때, 이미 황토방이라는 전기 매트를 경험도 없이
"무식하면 용감하다"하였던가?
컨테이너로 도착한 물건을 통관하고,
어찌어찌 신문광고 덕에
장님이 용케도 문고리를 잘 잡은 격으로
추운 토론토에서 "여 사장"이라는
타이틀로 자리를 잡았는데,
그러다 보니 때로는 배달도 해했다.
그 당시__ 1 ( c$ )은 1200원이 었으나,
선뜻 Coffee 한잔을 못 사먹었다.
그러나 이곳 캐네디언들은 하루에도 몇 잔씩?
줄을 서서 기다리며 마시는 것이 아닌가 ?
나는 속으로 내가 커피를 마시고 싶을 때
망설이지 않고 사서 마실 수 있을때가,
비로소 "나도 케네디언이다"라고 생각했다.
그때__ 1$ 이 아까워서
커피 마시기를 주저했던 시절에
유난히도 크게 들어오는 Coffee House 이름이
" Tim Hortons Coffee"였다.
그것도 " Always Fresh " 라는,
그후로 지금까지 Tim Hortons Coffee 는
내 친정집 만큼이나 반갑고
코끝에서 맴도는 그 맛이란,
"역전다방의 김마담 솜씨도 아닌 것이 ~"
" 진하다 못해 탄 냄새가 나는
강한 커피맛도 아닌 것이 ~"
어려서 익숙하던 친정어머니의 감칠맛 나는듯한
낙엽 태우는 냄새와 가장 가까운,
갓 볶아낸 커피의 그 맛 !! 이란__
지금도 고국이 그리울 때면
Tim Hortons Coffee를 사들고
호숫가를 거닐며
뜨거운 커피를 한 모금씩 마시면서
모든 그리움을 달래본다.
가끔, 장거리 운전을 하며
차에서 잠시 휴식을 취할 때도
24시간 영업하는 Tim Hortons Coffee Shop 이야말로
치안의 안전 지역인 캐나다에서도
유일한 지킴이가 되었다.
지금은 팀 홀튼 커피가 눈에 띄면
언제나 들리는 단골 커피 집인데,
오늘의 1$ 은 잔돈 개념.
이제 나도 케네디언 인가?
오늘은 하얀_ 눈이 소복이 내려,
받을 만큼의 각자 분량대로 복을 받고 있다.
힘들어하지 않고 견딜 만큼 만 받아서
버티고 서있는
욕심 없는 나무들을 보며 마음을 비워본다

My Encounter with Tim Hortons Coffee
When I first immigrated to Canada in 1997, Korea was going through the IMF crisis,
and as a newcomer,
I was so tense that my heart was frozen like the cold winter weather.
At that time, without any experience,
I began dealing with an electric mat called Hwangtobang,
after all, they say "You can’t fear what you don’t know"
Bringing the goods in containers through customs,
and thanks to the newspaper ads, somehow,
as if a blind person happens to find the door knob
I positioned myself in cold Toronto with the title of "female CEO", and I had to deliver goods myself at times.
In those days, 1 C$ was 1,200 Won, but I dared not venture to buy a cup of coffee.
But Canadians here would buy several cups a day standing in long lines!
I said to myself, “I would finally be a true Canadian”
when I can buy and drink a cup of coffee without hesitation right when I want to.
In those days, I couldn’t even spare a dollar.
In the days when I hesitated to get coffee,
the name of a Coffee House that kept ringing in my mind was
" Tim Hortons Coffee".
Especially the phrase "Always Fresh",
Since then,
Tim Hortons Coffee has always been as pleasant a name as my maiden home,
and the taste that leaves a sweet aroma is…
Oh my, "better than what Mrs. Kim at the old station cafe can make ~"
"It’s so strong that it’s almost like a burning smell…
But it’s not even the strong taste of coffee ~"
It’s as close as it can get to the scent of burning dry leaves
and the delightful taste created by my mother that I am so familiar with,
the taste of freshly roasted coffee, How can I describe the taste!! __
Even now, when I miss my home country,
I would buy myself some Tim Hortons Coffee and take a walk by the lake,
taking little sips of hot coffee and comforting myself from all the nostalgic feelings.
At times, when I’m driving long distances and taking short breaks in the car,
Tim Hortons Coffee Shops that operate 24 hours a day
were the true protectors for me even in Canada,
known to be a safe zone in terms of security.
Now, Tim Hortons has become a home away from home for me,
which I always visit onc e I spot a store,
And today, 1$ is onl y loose change for me.
Have I now become a true Canadian, too?
Today, I am receiving my portion of blessings,
watching the abundance of white snow that came.
And watching the trees standing tall without greed,
and taking onl y what they can handle,
I also attempt to empty my heart of self.
